BTA

BookTime Africa  is a web app and mobile app quiz game categorized into subjects, selected books and movies. The app uses Machine Learning (ML) algorithms and Blockchain to create a real-time interactive platform where educational questions will be asked and answers will be provided by users for monetary rewards. Earnings are stored in a users wallet with withdrawal limit set at $200 only at five thousand (5000) points in sum total of categories (including Maths & English) played. Users with less than $200 in wallet have an option of learning how to trade in cryptocurrency using a demo account. Question and answer sessions are made up of multiple choice, short answer, image based (both question & answer) and text to speech simulated randomly each within time limit of 35 seconds.

Game sequence: User starts with $0 and 0 points in Level 1, after answering 50 items correctly/incorrectly user moves to Level 2, both earning and user point update concurrently as user moves from one level to the other level gaining and losing. There are 4 levels of game play per subject category. E.g. Mathematics category, English Category and A Long Walk to Freedom Category e.t.c If a user was playing in a category and changed category user point would reset to $0 and 0 points to begin play afresh. Correct answer to a question gives user 5 points & $1 in earning while incorrect answer takes away same, a further wrong answer gives –points & -$. For user to earn after having – points and -$ user has to build up on points from the negative into positive and then continue to earn. If a user after playing all 4 levels does not get up to a thousand points when user clicks “next level”, Level 1 is loaded for user to start afresh $0 and 0 points.

Leaderboard: displays ranks, players, scores and categories most played by users on website and in-app.

Game play buttons include: Single/Battle quiz button, Self Challenge button, 20/50 button, Hint button and Reset timer button.

Battle Quiz button: automatically, randomly matches two players (users) from across the world to compete in a category and win prizes. This will foster cooperation in solving academic problems and keep conversations academic in BTA community.

Self Challenge button: user is able to choose category (e.g English or Biology e.t.c) and create own 10 Multiple Choice questions and answer, pick timer to self test in chosen category.

20/50 button: an incentive for game play where BTA takes away 2 incorrect answer options leaving 3 options for user (s) to battle with. One is allocated to user per game level.

Hint button: One is allocated to user per game level.

Reset Timer button: user can add more time allocated to game play per question by clicking and watching a reward video.

Adverts: are displayed as footer in category screen, subcategory screen, in game play screen in between answer options and game play buttons and full ads after every 5 questions answered by user (s).

MALPRACTICE
To guard against malpractice a *sign up feature* has been added incase if 5 people who are good in maths, english, biology, economics and chemistry respectively play under one user account to win. How? When signing up it is "compulsory" for a user to scan either thumb or first index finger of the right hand or left hand. This are the two fingers that most users will use to tap screen. So 5 users are unable to play using one account.

Payout: to BTA winners is via transfer within Nigeria and PayPal to outside Nigeria.

And yes BTA shall contain a kids category. BTA "test items" will not contain contradictory text & images, as the only audio content involved is that of BTA Artificial Intelligence reading out asked questions when the speaker button down far right of the Question Box is clicked. Advert settings on web/app stores shall restrict adult only content and otherwise from streaming in platform.

In scaling of BTA APP, a crypto-currency trading demo account will be added so that users with less than the withdrawal limit of $200 in their wallet can learn how to trade in crypto currency using a demo account.

Define three specific objectives that you would like to achieve with your proposal.

BTA is aimed at aiding to revive book reading culture in Africa,

Complementing the various efforts already in place to aid reduce the rising number of out of school children and

Providing that extra source of income in a highly challenged economy like ours.

What problems (particularly in value chain competitiveness and global disruption) are your community’s stakeholders facing due to the Covid-19 pandemic?

On the frontline Nigeria is faced with a growing number of out of school children partly due to the conflict in the North east caused by a terrorist organization called Boko Haram, Corona virus, a pandemic which has also led to loss of livelihoods worldwide and partly due to a highly challenged economy. There is also a growing menace of students’ addictive and extraneous use of Smartphone’s which is adversely affecting their academic performance. Recent surveys have found that very few students who own Smartphone’s (less than 25%) use them for academic purposes but about 70% (Nwachukwu & Onyenankeya, 2017) of them will rather spend hours (averagely over 5 hours daily) on these devices for social networking and gaming purposes. This non-academic use of mobile devices adversely affects students’ reading culture and consequently, their academic performance. (Fakokunde, 2017).

What minimum viable solution(s) are you proposing to address the challenge(s) in your community?

With the proliferation of affordable Smartphone’s in the African phone markets and a resultant increased Smartphone penetration of about 23% that brings total units of Smartphone in Africa to 412 million in 2018, there is a bulging market of African students available to be exploited by innovative businesses and products that can help translate frivolous use of Smartphone’s into highly beneficial purposes. Just as the social media and gaming industries have leveraged on this increased penetration, educational games and other resources can do well in the African market as educators are beginning to see many opportunities in this aspect.

Share your story (your narrative)

When I was in secondary school I had to wake up early in the morning and walk a mile to the bus station and sometimes I would need hurry up when the school bus was in sight so I don't miss it and would have been sweating. So somewhere in my mind I was already thinking of bringing school to my home so I can enjoy more sleep in the morning, today "BookTime Africa". As a student when I studied for a test I would usually create questions and answers to assess knowledge I've gained so far in the subject of study, therefore "Self Challenge option" a user is able to choose category (e.g English or Biology e.t.c) and create 5 Multiple choice or True/false question type, pick timer of 3 minutes for self regulation and self test in chosen category. It is glaring in the eyes that post covid-19 the norm in opportunities will get slimmer while opening doors for opportunities in areas like artificial intelligence, machine learning, augmented reality and virtual reality. There would be less and less of human contact and more and more of human-computer relations including online schooling, working from home and earning right at your finger tips. Thus BookTime Africa an online platform which can be summarized into gaming, commute and trading.

Please provide any additional relevant information that you would like to share.

Kids in Africa who don't own a mobile phone usually make use of their parents prior to when they would have acquired theirs. In delivering internet based solutions for Africa innovation needs take into consideration the high cost of internet bundles and profer solutions that can be adopted on a budget, solutions like Coursera, Edx and the likes which offer high quality videos and audios content barely have minimum adoption in Africa because of the cost of internet bundles: on waiting for a video to load a user easily runs out of data, BTA adopts text, audio text and still images only which easily load and are quite within a budget. A user self pace, study's and then interacts with BTA progressively and profitably.

✔️Payout is made at $200 only when a user hits five thousand (5000) points in sum total of categories (including Maths & English) played. If winners emerge from battle quiz mode, winners will share payout equally.

✔️This implies a user must accumulate 1000 in each of the 5 categorys played before earning (i.e Maths-1000, English-1000, Music-1000, geography-1000 and sports-1000).

✔️However, draws shall be held daily, weekly or monthly for smaller wins at smaller points.

In every exam theres a criteria ( marking scheme) by which a teacher award marks instead of approaching progression from one level to the other by correctness of answer we calculated based on percentage total of questions answered by user which we placed at 45% meaning so if 100 questions are loaded per level for example when a user gets 45% of questions right: level 1 is locked and user progresses into playing level 2, excetera.

Now the highlight here is a user *must choose* Maths and English amongst *5* categorys of play strengthening his/her ability in both subject which better prepares a student preparing for sec school exams or entry into higher institution. Now all of this data is fed back at the back-end which will be viable when we seek partnerships with higher institutions *(national/international)* who will give our players school scholarship.

I also used a mobile phone to fill out this application.

Hi. I like the motivation and concept. I cant see how it could be sustainable though. Would you elaborate? thanks

Sunday Bawa May 26, 2020

Take a look at the business model: free and paid categories, advertising even for content developers by creating their own categories, buy hit per question and data mining activities at the back-end. It self generates payout from pay in. Loop

Sunday Bawa May 26, 2020

E.g general knowledge category is free but economics category requires user pay $1 to access test items, most students, bankers and statisticians who are vast in economics would prefer to play economics rather than general knowledge. e.t.c If 1000 people choose
to play economics that's $1,000 payed in and for a user to earn $200, user needs play all 4 levels of BTA scoring at least 50 points in each level. However each level is loaded with 150 test items simulated randomly each within time limit of 35 seconds in 4 unique formats ( MCQ, short answer, image based & speech to text) so app is self sustainable. Thanks loop for your time.

Sunday Bawa May 26, 2020

Remember a correct answer gives you 5 points and $1 in earning, incorrect answer takes away same for all 4 levels of game play i.e in each level 50 correct answers are needed to earn $50 so we have $50 x 4 = $200.

Modupeola Giwa May 29, 2020

Hello Sunday...i like the concept
It is good for people who dont have the motivation to read...but how are you going to generate money from this.
I can also suggest that you add a feature that play music when reading because some people can read without music.
Also, past questions like for WAEC or UTME

Sunday Bawa May 30, 2020

Yes Ma'am, there's the option for background sound but am not quite sure if there's a line of code which can allow a user stream let's say Beyonce's music from iTunes or Google play as app background sound. That would be something. Money can be made from paid categories, buy hint per question option, ads displayed at intervals of game play and footer of game play and data mining.

Sunday Bawa May 30, 2020

Yes will contain NECO, WAEC and JAMB past questions along side others and will be updated as more of this Q&As are available.

Sunday Bawa May 30, 2020

Users with less than $200 in wallet cannot withdraw earnings but can learn trading with a Bitcoin demo account.

Chris odu Jun 4, 2020

Hi Sunday,
Going through your proposal i will say it is a good draft. I Also like the idea of the incentives for learning. However based on what your objectives says, one of your targets are out of school children. Lets use the case of out of school children in the north east and also IDP camps. Those kids in IDP camps or North east can barely eat, therefore smart devices are not readily available to them. So how do you intend to solve that huddle?

Regards

Sunday Bawa Jun 5, 2020

Hi, thanks. This solution is also aimed at helping other efforts at reducing the "rising" rate of out of school children in general to compliment what Government is doing in this area. How about kids still in school who don't have a smartphone? I didn't mention IDP camps because that would have made the solution isolated I only mentioned out of school children as there are other solutions that exist non mobile based solving the education of kids who have found themselves in IDP camps, which is to actually go into the camps either with teachers or tablets with already programmed curriculum within. Does Duolingo solve language learning problems of kids in IDP camps ?

Sunday Bawa Jun 12, 2020

Sunday Bawa Jun 25, 2020

Hi, hope this meets you well, pls critique and score. Thanks!

Imran Ali Jul 2, 2020

How you earn money, what's you're financial model ? I like you're idea

Sunday Bawa Jul 2, 2020

Hello Imran, very good question. Thanks.

Sunday Bawa Jul 2, 2020

Hello, thanks for the observation. Some categories are free and some categories you pay to have access, advertising in app and in game play, buy hit per question and data mining activities. It self generates payout from pay in. E.g general knowledge category is free but economics category requires user pay $1 to access test items, most students, bankers and statisticians who are vast in economics would prefer to play economics rather than general knowledge. e.t.c If 1000 people choose to play economics that's $1,000 payed in and for a user to earn $200, user needs play all 4 levels of BTA scoring at least 50 questions in each level.

Lammy Yusuf Jul 2, 2020

BTA looks promising but I would suggest the founder starts as just a quiz game with same modalities of game play and then scale to also a community and Bitcoin trading. As he would need to determine if users out there wanna go all out immediately into what they are not used to as it's a 3 in 1 ideation mostly what's out there is quiz games as an entity, online communitys as an entity and trading on its own. Overall great idea!

Sunday Bawa Jul 2, 2020

Wow! Suggestions noted with thanks. Pls score BTA and share with your friends to do same

(Account removed) Jul 3, 2020

I like this idea Sir. Am already eager to learn new things just to get that $200 pay check everyday. And I wanna be the first to use that app. It will be amazing for the African community. And what better way to steer us towards out books than with incentives? The idea is on Fire.

Sunday Bawa Jul 3, 2020

Hello Nafty, Nice a fresh perception about BTA from you. Thanks a lot.

EUNICE KAJALA Jul 3, 2020

Hi Sunday,
It is a nice game changer APP, looking at your objectives: how will you determine the rate of book reading culture revival in Africa? The reduction rate of school children drop outs? The provision of the extra source of income?

Sunday Bawa Jul 3, 2020

Many thanks for your observation Euka.
I. A user would self pace, study subject(s) before approaching app to answer questions as in total a user needs answer 200 questions correctly to earn some money
2. For out of school children who the reason was they were not able to afford School fee and are brilliant enough they can prepare some more on their own and attempt questions in chosen subjects and win and raise school fees or if such students are 18 and above they can register and write external WAEC or NECO and still get certified for higher education.
3. App generates payout from pay in: Some categories are free and some categories you pay $1 to access test items , advertising in app and in game play, buy hit per question and data mining activities at the back-end. Test items are simulated randomly each within time limit of 35 seconds in 4 unique formats ( MCQ, short answer, image based & speech to text) so app is self sustainable.

This is quite innovative, I like the idea of learning at the same time getting introduced to the interesting world of cryptocurrency. I look forward to seeing how this unfolds!

Sunday Bawa Jul 3, 2020

Many thanks Banarbas, I feel the same way too. Pls hit the score button and share with your friends to do same.

I like your idea. Its massive for the African community. Let's get back to books and with some incentives. Let's have some fun and earn real cash. Thumbs up

Sunday Bawa Jul 3, 2020

The feeling is mutual Duza. Many thanks.

(Account removed) Jul 3, 2020

Hi Sunday, BTA remains a brilliant concept with great potential especially at a time when e-learning will continue to accelerate in the developing world. However I want to refer to Badoaki's critique bordering on 'the buy-in of users', in her words, the need to determine if the targeted users out there want to go all out.... It is worth taking a long hard look at sustainability. BTA is truly a product of its time and can succeed. Regards.

Sunday Bawa Jul 3, 2020

Yes it's suitable for scaling of business. Noted with thanks

As a student when I studied a subject for a test I'd usually like revise by creating my own Q & A session from topics studied so therefore Self Challenge button has been added to BTA.
SELF CHALLENGE button: user is able to choose category (e.g English or Biology e.t.c) and create own 10 Multiple Choice questions and answer, pick timer to self regulate, to self test in chosen category.

Sunday Bawa Jul 10, 2020

To assess knowledge gained in chosen category.

Sunday Bawa Jul 12, 2020

✔️Payout is made at $200 only when a user hits five thousand (5000) points in sum total of categories (including Maths & English) played. If winners emerge from battle quiz mode, winners will share payout equally.

In every exam theres a criteria *(marking scheme)* by which a teacher award marks instead after approaching progression from one level to the other by correctness of answer we calculated based on percentage total of questions answered by user which we placed at 45% meaning if 100 questions are loaded per level when a user gets 45% of questions right: level 1 is locked and user progresses into playing level 2.

MALPRACTICE
To guard against malpractice a *sign up feature* has been added incase if 5 people who are good in maths, english, biology, economics and chemistry respectively play under one user account to win. So 5 users are unable to play using one account.

Thomas Mueller Jul 16, 2020

Since this is kind of a game with learning effect, but targeted also to under age persons and kids, how do you overcome the regulation in terms of lucky games etc.

Sunday Bawa Jul 16, 2020

Thank you very much. Yes it would contain subjects for this category of kids you are talking about, but first "test items" would not contain contradictory text & images, as the only audio content involved is that of BTA Artificial Intelligence reading out asked questions when the speaker button down far right of the Question Box is clicked and secondly advert settings on web/app stores shall restrict adult only content and otherwise from streaming in app.

Thomas Mueller Jul 17, 2020

Thanks Sunday, that is not what I meant. If you play and can earn money this is a lucky game and probably will be prohibited under age of 18?

Sunday Bawa Jul 17, 2020

Yes on playstores rating.

Sunday Bawa Jul 18, 2020

Got it, the categorys will be Trivia and Education

Sunday Bawa Jul 17, 2020

I get it. Educational, gambling.

Sunday Bawa Jul 18, 2020

BTA shall be listed as Trivia and Education on app stores. BTA web app has been designed in such away that it channels downloads on the app stores as users can only play using "self challenge" option on the web app for full game options user would need download app.

A sneak preview of on-going - andriod, webapp version done ! but iOS version is in the making....in a giffy will. pls
http://web.booktimeafrica.com/
Click menu and click "self challenge" atleast on the webversion user can practice before downloading app and engage in game play

Sunday Bawa Jul 25, 2020

The reason for a webversion is for rurals who cannot at the moment afford a smartphone but atleast can afford a phone that can browse using any browser. But to get a piece of the full action on BTA, user needs download app in andriod/iOS. Effect of this is rurals would be to strategize on how to get a smartphone so they can get a piece of the full action and do much more with it and aspire greater. ☝️

Alin-Claudiu Apostu Aug 8, 2020

Hello Sunday,
I super like the idea of a gamified education platform where incentives can be transformed into tangible things. Congrats for that.
- You explained the idea very well, with detailed functions on the platform and as I can see you also have a mockup for it. Have you tested it out? What was the feedback? Is there anything similar that you've found in the world?
- I understand that you have several income streams, however I have a slight concern over the financials. 1$ for each question sounds very promising and also a good incentive. I see that 1000 people can bring 1000$ in the platform but can potentially turn into 1000 people that you need to pay as well, especially since they are experts in fields (e.g. economics).
- I was wondering if the platform is also web-based how will you protect from the login to be shared by other people. I understand that on mobile you will use the fingerprint identification (which can also be sided by multiple people being in the same space and suggesting the answers but I think it is pretty hard to prevent that). I was wondering how you plan that on web?
- I understand your story and I like it very much. As well as the problem behind it but where do you see the app going? what is the larger vision for it? Are you fulfilling the education and reading objective through it?
- Did you assembled a team for this project? Do you have any backers?

Sunday Bawa Aug 8, 2020

Hi Mr Alin, thank you so very much, I'd like start by saying I ended creating a game I cannot easily win myself despite being the one uploading Q&As, BTA is self aware when a user starting earning too much it loads harder questions and when a user starts loosing too much it loads easier questions: Level 1 is easy, Level 2 is hard, Level 3 is harder and Level 4 is hardest. A user needs 5000 points from 5 Categorys (including Maths and English) to earn $200 outrightly. So am thinking someone whose good at economics would go for art subjects well government Category isn't free too. Hehhehehehehe. Terms of Service:
App is free for download on play store and apple store respectively.
Some categories are free to access while some $0.99 is paid to access test items.
20/50 takes away two (2) wrong answer options leaving three (3) answers for user (s) to choose from its one per level as play incentive.

Also by user signing up to app user agrees to usage of users data (excluding full name) for research and advertising.

A user can be deleted for actions found detrimental to BookTime Africa APP.

Unlock ads free version at $20.

Hint: one free hint per level.

Skip question is one per level as play incentive.

The Game Play option available on BTA WEB APP is self challenge, for full game play option user need download app on iOS or Andriod.

Payout: is made at $200 only when a user hits five thousand points (5000) in sum total of categories (Maths and English is compulsory) played. If winners emerge from battle quiz mode, winners will share payout equally. This implies a user is to accumulate 1000 points in each of the 5 categorys played before earning $200 (i.e Maths-1000, english-1000, Music- 1000, geography-1000 and sports- 1000).

Referral: refer your friends to sign up with your referral code and earn $0.1 per person. Withdrawal limit is set at $200 only.

However draws shall be held daily, weekly or monthly for smaller wins at smaller points.

Yes I had developed and launched a prototype on Playstore it had 510 downloads and barely made $200 in 3 months but it was brought down because of development standard, I met the wrong developers and paid dearly for it. But now I have state of the art MVP. The web app is designed mainly as a pre-test tool to engage in actual test so when you click "self challenge" from the menu bar www.booktimeafrica.com you would have a feel of what you would be getting when you download app on Playstore or Apple.

Sunday Bawa Aug 8, 2020

Yes Duolingo is a bit similar but it's language based BTA covers more areas inclusive of language. Coursera and edx barely have minimum adoption rate in Africa not because they are not wonderful platforms but because of the cost of internet bundle. Before a user would open a video and watch a lecture users internet bundle has finished. In approaching design of online solutions for Africa this needs be put into consideration so BTA question type format is multiple choice, image-based, true/false and audible questions.

Sunday Bawa Aug 8, 2020

It is compulsory to select Maths and English amongst your chosen Categorys of play to win the price. That's Maths, English and 3 other Categorys.

Sunday Bawa Aug 8, 2020

In scaling of BTA the "BooKoin" tab will be added to home screen just under "Self Challenge" for users who are unable to earn $200 but have earned something they can help themselves with valuable knowledge on how to trade crypto currencys. So when a user clicks "BooKoin" button a Crypto trading simulator is loaded in app for user to experience. BTA is a game, community and trading platform.

How I got inspired with the idea for payout criteria is out here in Nigeria a student must have passed senior secondary school certificate examinations (s.s.c.e) with 5 credits in atleast 5 subjects (Maths and English included) to certified best fit and gain admission into any higher Institution of choice. Currently in talks with National Examinations Council (NECO), National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Nigerian Library Association (NLA) and stanbicIBTC Bank towards being BTAs marketing partner.

The rural were specifically factored into BTA design thinking so the website is a miniature version of the full functionalities of game “in-app” with access to “self challenge” and Leaderboard only. And this decision was made based on research by Pew Research Centre, 2017. owners of mobile phones (I.e phones that can browse the internet and do Facebook) in rural areas (less educated) were at 59% while users of mobile phones in urban areas (more educated) were at 90%. Users of smartphones in rural were at 8% while in the urban areas were at 44%, that’s a difference of + - 36% for both mobile and smartphones. BTA bridges the gap in that the rural can practice via the website (www.booktimeafrica.com) up until when they would have upgraded from mobile to smart the effect of this is actually in the mind set of the user which is gradually channelling that energy for phone addiction to aspiration, research, development and opportunities. There is already a worrisome online betting culture amongst African youth of late instead of wishful thinking why not bet on what it is that you have upstairs, on BTA?

Dear Sunday
I have reviewed your proposal and have a few questions for you, again looking at from a North American perspective as I read.
Your alignment with Blockchain, how trusted is it in Africa
Are you conflating learning with money? Would your reward system be better aligned with fostering learning?
What is the ultimate goal or outcome of this app? if the aim is to revive book reading in Africa, is money the only way to do that, just asking
What are your performance metrics being used on achieving your outcomes and how are you going to report them and to whom?
The idea/motivation behind the concept is great but would there be a likely partner to help build and reward the platform versus cash
How does the developer of this app make money
Again I think the concept is interesting and holds some promise, just be nice for the reader to understand a bit more.
Please let me know if you needed anything further
Mike

Hello Mark,
Thank you very much for dropping by. Banks in Africa of late have adopted blockchain, end to end encryption in book keeping which ensures that transaction details are updated in real-time and unable to be tempered with. From my bank app for example I can see accurately the date and time of all the credits and debits made by me or the bank e.g GTBank: $0.5 debit- sms alert maintenance charge, 17/8/20-08.47pm e.t.c it's also adopted in Open University of Nigeria (Nigerias distance learning university, entirely online) so it's becoming popular in Africa to ascertain and accept the quality of a data set when it's back-end is powered by blockchain. Rewarded learning rather to provide more access to quality education as quality education out here is pricey. Even free education online becomes a bit expensive because of the high cost of internet bundle. The Ultimate goal of BTA is research and development and how this translates into adoption of digital economy by Africans, how betting on education rather than wishful thinking can get Africans scholarships into higher institutions home and abroad. At the back-end, BTA admin is able to view categories and corresponding scores being achieved per user and unable to temper with it the leaderboard is also accessible to the general public on website. Here in Africa, a student is said to have qualified for University education if achieved atleast credits in 5 subjects inclusive of Maths and English in Senior Secondary School Exams popularly called WAEC and NECO. BTA designs it's core sequence of game play by conditioning that for payout of $200 a user must gain 5000 points sum total in 5 categories played inclusive of Maths and English. Now am hoping to approach Institutions and offer them a reasonable percentage share ownership of BTA in exchange for awarding scholarships to users who have done well in-app.
BTA is self sustaining, ads are displayed in app, paid ads via in-app notifications, we can customize a Category for client at a reasonable fee and time spent on platform by users . Some Categorys are free while some you pay $0.99 to access test items. For users who don't like ads you can remove ads by clicking settings, then click ad remove which is at $20 only.
Referral: Now that's '1 cent' per person you have to sign up and make active on BTA towards your earn. But for you to withdraw you must have earned $200.
Now some are good in biology, maths & English is (compulsory for a win) then physics, chemistry making the 5 subjects required for win of $200. You need buy biology $0.99 to have access to questions before you play it. An art student would pick economics instead, economics isn't free it's at $0.99 too. When 1000 people pay access for economics and another for biology, then app can pay its own payout and partnered universities can give scholarships to outstanding users however they may choose to further evaluate users to offer admission but atleast tuition would have been sorted out. As even app maintenance is at very minimal cost.
Thanks for you time.
