Digital Farm Input Technology

Digital farm input supply technology that involves the use of community shared digital tanks  connected with prepaid meters allows small holder farmers to access organic pesticides in their premises even if they have little amount of money. To access organic pesticides farmers will pay through their mobile phones and/or online banking system and receive a message with a billing code and user instruction guide in both languages narrative and English. A billing code is inserted to a prepaid meter which allows organic pesticide to flow from the tanks to farmers' bottles.

State your goals

 To use digital farm input supply approach other than agro-dealer, chain leader and local traders approach. Our technology allow small holder farmers to access organic pesticides from digital tanks connected with pre-paid meters allow easy access of organic pesticide by small holder farmers from developing countries even if they have little amount of money  helping them to increase yield, income and living standard.

 To ensure 100% environmental friendly since the technology ignores the use of packages that after using pesticides they are thrown in farms as empty pesticide bottles polluting the environment. Also ignore the use of chemical pesticide and use organic pesticide that is safe to users and environment.

 To saves time and money; the technology allows smallholder farmers to access pesticide in their working areas hence no transportation cost and time loss of moving from farms to Agro-shops. The situation enables farmers to have enough time working in their farm.

 To provide relevant information; before small holder farmers taping bio-pesticides from the automatic tanks they must do online payment through the mobile phone and /or online banking system receive a billing code with a summary of user instruction in both English and vernacular language based on the country and place where farmers are located.

 To eliminating re-packing of expired farm inputs/pesticide which is done by few untruthfully agro-dealers/suppliers and has adverse effects to the climate.

What problems (particularly in value chain competitiveness and global disruption) are your community’s stakeholders facing due to the Covid-19 pandemic?

In developing countries small holder farmers work on land plots smaller than 2 hectors. Many are poor and have food insecurity with limited access to markets and services. Their choices are constrained, but they farm their land and produce 80% of the World food. Lack of accessibility and affordability of high quality agriculture input such as pesticides to small holder farmers from developing countries causes 40% of the world crop losses. Poor Agriculture Input Supply Approach such as the agro-dealer approach, the chain leader approach and the local traders approach hinders productivity and incomes to more than 500 million smallholder farmers in developing countries causing them to live under $ 2 per day (World Bank, 2018; FAO 2017: AGRA 2017).

What minimum viable solution(s) are you proposing to address the challenge(s) in your community?

Community shared digital tanks  connected with prepaid meters allows small holder farmers to access organic pesticides in their premises even if they have little amount of money.

Hello Edmund, first, you must upload your photo as we want to know who we are cocreating with. Next, thanks for sharing the overview of your idea with us :)

Here are some suggestions to help you refine your idea:
1. How does this digital solution help the women in your community? Elaborate with supporting facts/data.

2. Your target audience is a little broad (just farmers?). You need to be specific (provide the demographics). Recall the scope of this challenge- its for those with digital projects that impact women in their community. Therefore, please structure your idea accordingly.

3. Your answers to the question 3 (regarding problems) need to be precise. As in, what exactly is the problem in your community, what kind of impact does it have on the value chain competitiveness and global disruption- during the current public health crisis? How does it affect the women in your community? Back all your claims with credible data/facts.

4. What kind of opportunities can be leveraged to ease the problems and why? Then introduce your solution and state how it addresses the gap between the problems and opportunities to benefit your target audience.

5. Discuss the availability and accessibility of your solution. Are there "digital pesticide tanks" already installed in the concerned community? If yes, do they belong to you or other organizations? If they belong to others, are you going to use yours? How? If not installed, what are the steps you would need to take to install them? Also, where will this be installed? Won't the installation itself damage the environment? Discuss the challenges.
Accessibility- You mentioned that the customers would make online payments to get the code. What if they don't have proper access to internet or cant read either languages? Elaborate and back your reasoning with credible data. Tip- your answers to these could be part of your story.

6. The story should be about you trying to solve a problem in your community to benefit your target audience and not a resume of your qualifications.
For instance, there isn't a clear call-to-action and it lacks critical information about (i) what problem you are trying to solve and why; (ii) how the problem has affected you personally; (iii) what steps you took to address the problems; (iv) what worked and didn't work; (v) how you finally reached the milestone etc.

Good luck!

Hello sounds really good. However if not being viewed from the angle of timely access by women to this farm inputs it's good to go for both male and female farmers. It also looks a perfect fit for the digital changer challenge

Agnes Brenda Tugume Jul 17, 2020

The idea is good though just wandering how feasible it is?

James Kiruri Jul 17, 2020

IOT is the thing of the future, have you looked at partnering with telecos who can then assist in the roll out of IOT technologies?

greetings
u would like to congratulate on you ideas as well as recommending you to look on youth because they are the one who can impact your solutions

Tafadzwa Chikwereti Jul 23, 2020

Hello
Its good initaive to farmerss
I hve a few questions and suggestions.
First of all you can add a picture on your profile
2) i was looking at the pesticides wil they be delivered or have a central location where farmer's can access them ?
How dows it help farmers (women) improve their lifes ?

I would suggest to try to incorporate easily accesible technology for farmers to use. Since they are low income households

Hi Edmond, You are doing good for the farmers. But can you please share with us more details about your solution? I would like to know more technical solutions to your idea.

Andinda Ruth Jul 24, 2020

the idea is good but what is your business model

Marabe Ditshego Jul 26, 2020

Hi Edmond,
I trust you are well.

Let me congratulate you on your idea. I really like it and believe it can have multiple applications besides farming inputs.

I wish to share a few questions and remarks for your consideration.
1. Will the small holder farmers be expected to purchase this technology or will you be leasing it?
2. Consider amending the problem section to reflect how COVID-19 has negatively impacted the traditional approaches to inputs (pesticides). By so doing, this will give your approach great advantage which you can then clearly explain in the minimum viable solution section.
3. Consider amending your minimum viable solution to reflect on the features your solution will have, your business model, your competitive advantage, etc. Use this section to sell your technology to the audience.

Hello Edmond, You may consider to look at what these startups are offering;
Volta Irrigation
Raino Tech4Impact
Complete Farmer

In Addition to the 3 above, there are alot startups helping out farmers to scale up the farming business. Like Here in Zambia we have emsika and agripredict.

I wish you success. Your remarks and vote on my idea will make a difference.

Hi Edmond. I struggled with the idea of 'digital tanks'. Isn't it just a 'vending machine' that accepts digital payments for the pesticides? Secondly have you ensured that you have secured the supply of organic pesticides for smooth distribution and what kind of certification/accreditation do you need at this level of supply chain?

Hello Edmund, great idea thanks for sharing this awesome idea. How have you address the aspect of African women farmers are less likely than men to adopt improved crop varieties and management systems. How does gender affect technology adoption among African farmers? How does the introduction of new technologies affect women's well-being?
