Web app for empowering Villagers in Myanmar

To develop a Google based map application / website  to easily locate villages in Myanmar. The application also features photo sharing site and discussion forum.

Define three specific objectives that you would like to achieve with your proposal.

Rural population (% of total population) in Myanmar was reported at 69.42 % in 2018, according to the World Bank collection of development indicators. This application has potential to make a good contribution in Myanmar's government effort in rural deveopmnet work.

1) To develop a Google based map application to locate the villages in Myanmar easily.  The web must be very user friendly
2) The application also features photo sharing section. People in one village will be able to find out activities in another village
3) Discussion forum - for knowledge sharing among villagers

What problems (particularly in value chain competitiveness and global disruption) are your community’s stakeholders facing due to the Covid-19 pandemic?

Community focused website will be very useful among villagers in Myanmar, especially in during Covid-19 pandemic. There are travel restrictions throughout the country.

What minimum viable solution(s) are you proposing to address the challenge(s) in your community?

The proposed solution is feasible technically. It will used proven technologies in web development to deliver the solution. A sample web site is already at

http://map.village.mingalarpar.website/

It has potential to become a website used by ten of thousands of villagers in Myanmar. It has potential to contribute to the betterment of millions of villagers in Myanmar.

Share your story (your narrative)

A sample website for the proposed solution is at
http://map.village.mingalarpar.website/

It is a Google based map application. It will also features Photo sharing and discussion forum.

Please provide any additional relevant information that you would like to share.

It is a very feasible solution. The main thing that is required at this stage is a well designed awareness campaign to promote the benefits of using a community oriented website. Continued web programming is also required to implement all the functionalities.

Dear Peter, congratulations, this is a great idea. What would be great is to include details of how you intend to move the idea and actualise it including a route to market and how to monetise. Well done and all the best.

Kazi Jawoad Hossain Jul 24, 2020

Dear Peter,

If the application is based on google map, why would Govt. of Myanmar would need help from a startups map for aforementioned activities is not clear.

I can think of a number of application of exact village identification but photo sharing and knowledge exchange is not something commercially interesting when we have Instagram or Facebook for that sort of stuff. How your app is different, how it'd add value to people's life and what is the theory of change is important for making your idea a reality.

Hope to read the refined version. Good Luck.

Hi Peter,
Good idea, but, you need to clarify on your objectives, what is the use of your web APP for Myanmar villages? Is it for tourism attraction, promotion of agriculture, competition between villages? What specific discussion forum among villagers is all about? Marriages, wedding ceremonies, agriculture, entrepreneurship etc.

Peter ZAW Jul 24, 2020

Dear Kazi and EUNICE,
Thanks for your review.

To clarify the description of the project, I should change the words with "photo sharing" with an online portal to show village information and villagers community photos.

What I have in mind is a very simple web app /site which is suitable for people who know very little about computer and IT. They should not need to know how to register or how to operate a Facebook group account or what hash tag is. Needs to be dead simple to use the website.

A few people (i.e. admins) from the community will maintain the community photos site and knowledge sharing site. Very High percentage of the users will be just users who easily access the site without registering. The topics discussed in the knowledge will mainly be in agriculture, health, and education.

Thanks again.

Is it non profit? How you will make money from it?

To add to your solution, I am sharing with you questions from one of our trainings that can help in refining our ideas and projects

What business model will you follow to implement this idea?
What methodology or strategy will you use during different processes of implementing this idea?
Which are the processes you have to go through until the finalization of the idea?
What means or tools do you need to implement my idea?
Which are your potential collaborators, investors?

I honestly suggest that before you submit your idea or project, please and ask yourself these questions and even if you have submitted their project, do remember that we still have opportunity to refine our ideas and resubmit. I hope that you find this useful.

I hope its useful and will help you refine your idea for the final lap

I would apreciate it i you would comment and support my idea

Have great day

Hi Peter,
I trust you are well.

Let me congratulate you on your idea. With some work, it can be something that can change the lives of many people in Myanmar.

I wish to share a few considerations.

1. Consider expanding your idea description section to reflect the exact aim of the app i.e. promote inter-village travelling, who the people being targeted to make use of the app (target market) and what these people should expect (features) from the app.
2. Consider expanding the problem section to really show (with statistics or facts pulled from reliable sources) the specific problems caused by COVID-19 in Myanmar that you are trying to address with your app.
3. Consider expanding the minimum viable solution section to reflect on how the app will solve the problem/s listed in the problem section and the exciting features that will be implemented to the sample website in the future to make it more powerful.
4. As it stands I believe your objectives are in order however I ask that you consider making them SMART to reflect how you intend to turn your prototype into a world-class web app – visit https://thedigitalprojectmanager.com/project-objectives/ for a detailed explanation.
5. Consider changing the story section to reflect how you were inspired to come up with this idea – this in my opinion is the most important section.

Hello Peter, your idea can support villagers indeed in these pressing times. Several comments from my side: 1) Could you share in your description of the idea what is the mobile phone penetration rate in Myanmar for villagers? This will enable you to argue that your target group would actually have the opportunity to use your content. 2) Please elaborate on your business model and how you will monetize your app. 3) How would you start and scale throughout Myanmar? Do you want to start with some villages or regions and then expand? 4) Which tags or categories you will use so that your users have the clarity which content is for him/her? For example if I am working with fish business predominantly, I may not be interested to learn about activities of villagers who are dealing with fruit. Or maybe there are circumstances when I would like to connect with those who work with different crops or village products than me?

Onwuka Uchenna Jul 26, 2020

Wonderful idea but I advice you consider expanding the scope of the innovation to work Globally.

Ricardo Martinezgarza Jul 26, 2020

Dear Peter,

It is an interesting idea. I think it would be beneficial to your presentation to address the folowing questions:
1. What is the connection between the mapping of the villages and the (photo) portal and the discussion forum?
2. What benefits or interactions among villages are gained by the platform?
3. Could you please provide internet penetration statistics within these villages? Is it big enough to expect a large-enough user base?
4. Economicallly/financially, what is the sustainability model?
5. Why would users want to use it?

My very best wishes

Cesar Contreras Jul 27, 2020

Hi, Peter!

Great initiative to benefit rural communities through technology!

While your idea sounds very good to boost Internet presence of remote areas, I would like to know to what extent you consider limited Internet connectivity in these areas might be a problem to promote the use of this solution.

I have analyzed several projects to implement in remote/dispersed locations, and sometimes connectivity itself is the initial challenge to overcome. I have bumped into some solutions that could work if connectivity doesn't have to "be online", like cached contents. You might look into that if you consider it might help strengthen the applicability and use of your app.

Hope you find this useful :)
Best,
César

@Peter, good initiative. This could come handy for many professionals including ones working in health sector like myself. Are you working on developing further on this so you can integrate your system with other apps?

Jaymer Jayoma Jul 29, 2020

Hello Peter,, can you add GIS capabilities? It will be helpful for the Decision Makers. Thanks

Jaymer

The question is how is this more unique than Google map itself ?

José Salgado Aug 18, 2020

Hi Peter, it looks like a really great idea, I want to know more of your bussines model, have u measure the traction of it?

Muyunda Kaonga Aug 24, 2020

Hi Peter, great start. My first advice would be for you to work on your storytelling narrative to give us the originality of your idea and how you got to identify the problem. Then I wanted to find out the difference between your app and Google maps or other maps on app stores then what's the connection does it have in relation to tackling COVID-19? All the best

Olajide Ogunmoroti Aug 29, 2020

Dear Peter,
