Her Fingers Can Code

Her Fingers Can Code (HFCC) is an initiative that aims to bridge digital gender gap between males and females by exposing young females to innovative and technical skills through programming training that are conducted on physical classes and through an online system.

The leading project is HFCC ClassRoom which is focusing on providing free Online programming classes targeting African females.

In accordance to that we conduct weekly physical training to Tanzanian gilrs who are challenged on accessing the provided online classes. Together with it we conduct frequent ICT talk ups to rebuild inner desires for girls in STEM careers

State your goals

Our goals is to see an African community with self motivated females in acquiring skills, education and employment being full involved in technology, entrepreneurship and innovation.

What problems (particularly in value chain competitiveness and global disruption) are your community’s stakeholders facing due to the Covid-19 pandemic?

Due to covid-19 alot of restriction have been imposed so as to prevent the spread of disease and so even physical meeting are disparaged. before covid-19 different stackholder involved in providing physical training to girls in STEM but due to covid-19 the physical training can not be conducted.

covid-19 has brought a need for online platforms that would facilitate meetings, training and session that initially were conducted physically.

What minimum viable solution(s) are you proposing to address the challenge(s) in your community?

covid-19 has brought a need for online platforms that would facilitate meetings, training and session that initially were conducted physically.

At Her Fingers Can Code we have developed a platform that will now help the training and session that were supposed to be conducted physically to be conducted online. The platform connect young women and girls to digital capacity  building training from different stakeholders.

Share your story (your narrative)

On my First year at University I joined in a University Incubator and because I was the only girl in among more than 20 incubatees with no other reason I dropped. A year Later other members (men) graduated from the Incubator and started making real world solutions helping the community , people from industries were looking for them and they started making money. From there I made up my mind and I decided to start a fresh. I joined the Incubator again and there my HFCC idea originated from and am now helping my community.

Please provide any additional relevant information that you would like to share.

Hello i see yyou're new here Anyway this is a small piece of advice My advice Start small and build momentum, Being a social entrepreneur can be very difficult, you are constantly in a field dominated by changing dynamics, you will often face business challenges, and you have to start small and build your enterprise from the ground up. You must be resilient, realistic, and passionate about your goals and the impact you are trying to achieve. To add to your solution, I am sharing with you questions from one of our trainings that can help in refining our ideas and projects What business model will you follow to implement this idea? What methodology or strategy will you use during different processes of implementing this idea? Which are the processes you have to go through until the finalization of the idea? What means or tools do you need to implement my idea? Which are your potential collaborators, investors? I honestly suggest that before you submit your idea or project, please and ask yourself these questions and even if you have submitted their project, do remember that we still have opportunity to refine our ideas and resubmit. I hope that you find this useful. Also, please create time and take the campus online trainings as the trainings are there to help campus members understand what it is to be an entrepreneur. Consider my idea vote and comment on it Let co create Thank you

Saida Nyasasi Jul 30, 2020

Thank you so much for the advice, I am working on it

your welcome help my idea by leaving a thumbs up and comment

Sunday Bawa Jul 31, 2020

Hi, please let's stick to females as the name of your initiative implies ? This should be an online/offline approach? in that those who have done well online ( so their should be an AI measurement and evaluation component to platform) are admitted into the offline program at a very subsidized rate and issued a certificate of participation afterwards. Web app could also have a menstrual calculator, messenger and opinion poll creator e.t.c nice concept, well done ma'am

Saida Nyasasi Aug 7, 2020

sure, thank you for the comment, I will work on it

Sunday Bawa Jul 31, 2020

Tell us a movie about how you got the idea ? What sparked you to make a move, where you are right now and in the next year's ...well this could also make up your 2 mins video, you never know

Saida Nyasasi Aug 7, 2020

I will soon post it Bawa

EUNICE KAJALA Jul 31, 2020

Hi Saida,
It is a good initiative. Have a look at your goals, categorize them. It will be easier for you to measure or to determine the level or the impact of your initiative.

Saida Nyasasi Aug 7, 2020

sure Eunice

Htet Zan Linn Aug 1, 2020

Hi Saida, have you considered building communities and alumni network (online or offline) of people who have taken your classes. I am always looking for a program that helps in building a support network after my classes are complete. That way the class I take does not end at the end of the course day.

Saida Nyasasi Aug 7, 2020

yes Linn, we have considered it, i will keep you posted on the implementation

Achia Khaleda Aug 1, 2020

Hello, Its a good project, You are offering free coding class, How do you make money.

Saida Nyasasi Aug 7, 2020

I had thought of two possible ways to generate money, One is the program will only be free for girls, for males they will have to pay the subscription fee to learn from the system. Two, the platform will be include other organisations that will require to reach their female audiences in tech, such organisations will have to pay the subscription fee for the service.

DJ Koeman Aug 5, 2020

where do you source the content from? is it in English or Swahili? how do you intend to generate revenue to create sustainable model?

Saida Nyasasi Aug 7, 2020

The contents will be sources from the programming books that are already available and they will be referenced. And the contents will be available in both English and Swahili, a user will just choose or switch to the language of her choice.

DJ Koeman Aug 8, 2020

thanks and who pays for the training (what is your business model)?

Sukhveer Atwal Aug 7, 2020

Hi Sadia ,

This is a great idea! I love your story and what you have developed!

Could you go into more detail about the market research you have completed, how many users have you supported and maybe share a bit more about what makes your course unique to your competitors.

Have you also thought about finance so how will you fund the platform, will it be revenue generating or have you got plans to raise money?

Good luck!

Sukhveer

This is a good initiative, but just wandering the online classes, howare you going to cater for the girls that can't access data for long trainings?
then during the training do you offer the girls computers and if not how is this catered for?
All the best

Saida Nyasasi Aug 8, 2020

Good day team, am kindly inviting you to my page to review my idea and give comments on how I can make it a better idea. I value your contributions so much and am humbly welcoming you all to advise and vote for me.

Nabuyuni Sankan Aug 9, 2020

Hello Nyasasi,

Great Initiative.Good Job.Quick question? Are all this classes free online and what is the sustainability of the program?
Also if you can elaborate the goal within the specific objectives and research this will allow visibility of the project.
Good Luck Keep at it.

Best Regards.

When you wrote this, "The platform connect young women and girls to digital capacity building training from different stakeholders", do you mean that you will be aggregating resources to connect your target group to learn coding? If so, how will you track the impact of your goal?

Ivana Kostic Aug 11, 2020

Good idea! It would be great to have a job opportunity at the end of the course, integrated in your business model. Or something similar. This would boost you and your female users. Good luck! Ivana

Calister Simba Aug 14, 2020

Yes I agree on that!!

Calister Simba Aug 11, 2020

Hi Saida, the idea is really good and the name provides motivation for females. I will recommend you to include targeted age as well as your business model. Keep pushing girl!!

Also if you can show your unique feature in your project then you might have a great chance.

Rani Mutiara Aug 13, 2020

Hai Saida, this is certainly a welcome idea and well done on it. How do you monetise or is it purely a social enterprise?

Okey Esse Aug 16, 2020

Hello, how do you overcome the challenges of poor internet connectivity in rural and peri-urban communities and high cost of internet data for your target trainees?

Angela Matlapeng Aug 16, 2020

Hi Saida. Great initiative. I just wanted to know what are the programming languages being taught here, if there are different age groups, have you customized the content to their level such that the learning curve is not steep., and finally, how do you keep your training programs realistic/relevant to what is currently happening in the industry and in demand in terms of skills acquisition?

Leidy Fajardo Sua Aug 19, 2020

Hi Saida, This is a very good projet. How do you get money to do it
sustainable? About teachers or mentors: They work as teachers of these girls? or How do you get to involve them?

James Kiruri Aug 20, 2020

Hello Saida, how do you monetise, by charging a fee for those attending the coding classes? Well done and all the best.

Muyunda Kaonga Aug 28, 2020

Hello Saida, this is a brilliant idea. The tech industry can move even faster by increasing the diversity of talent. You can read more about a success story in brazil about how young women are learning to code. It is a similar story to what you are sharing.
