Innovative teaching practices and improving students' learning: it's all up to you

There is now a consensus that high quality professional learning can lead to improvements in student performance, and the quality of teaching influences learning in the classroom. The Ministry of Education in Cape Verde has started a web lab project in secondary schools on the islands and has introduced computational thinking to the students. External monitors ensure the students' learning and also deliver a ready-made package of ICT training for teachers. Besides the fact that the web lab serves only urban students, we find that the model includes programs that introduce some new educational technologies and incorporate a short training session to familiarize teachers with the software; it seems to include so-called "ready-to-use" curriculum packages, which are accompanied by a token training to introduce the teacher to the new curriculum materials;
Rather, this initiative aims at a structured and facilitated activity for teachers with the objective of increasing their teaching ability. The focus on teaching skills is intended to include a wide range of skills including classroom management, evaluation and lesson planning. It is a process based on teachers collaborating in the context of their practice in order to enable their continuous development. It is a process supporting the subject co-ordinating team to define highly specific areas of student learning for improvement, design evidence-based strategies and collect evidence to verify their impact.
More recent research in effective teacher learning and expertise development suggests authentic opportunities for teachers to raise student outcomes. Simply put, through the involvement of leadership in each school, the designed aims to be adaptable to each school and focus on the specific challenges of their classrooms and students.

This project is designed for the context of Cape Verde, a country belonging to the West Sub-Saharan Africa region. Cape Verde is an archipelago consisting of 10 islands of which 9 are inhabited. It is situated approximately 500 km from Senegal. It has a huge diaspora of approximately half a million Cape Verdeans and at the national level, statistical data revealed in 2017 that the population was 500,000 inhabitants.
"The consultancy and management training centre" was established in 2009 in Cidade da Praia which is the capital of the country. However, we propose a wider scope of intervention, using Information and Communication Technologies to enable a hybrid project of content delivery and training for a wide range of audiences.
