Rapefighters.com: Web Platform that Links the Community with Professional Helpers
Rapefighters.com is a web platform that links the community(Nigerians) with verified, licensed and registered hospitals/clinics, the Nigeria Police Force and registered and competent lawyers near them to solve post-rape problems. The platform also seeks to provide learning resources on how to avoid rape and what to do to avoid rape to all, the female population in particular.
This can be deployed to other countries.
Define three specific objectives that you would like to achieve with your proposal.
This project seeks to:
(1)Ensure every rape survivors in Nigeria do not suffer post-rape consequences
(2)Ensure quality learning material on rape are available to every girls/women in Nigeria.
(3)Advocate the adoption of technology to eliminate rape as a crime from every community in Nigeria.
What problems (particularly in value chain competitiveness and global disruption) are your community’s stakeholders facing due to the Covid-19 pandemic?
Covid-19 pandemic has globally led to the restriction of movement of individuals in both rural and urban communities. This restriction keeps each person indoor; while those who have the skill and resources work remotely, others without the skill or resources have been rendered jobless and as such are "too free". Sex workers have been variously disconnected from their clients since not everyone is aware of virtual sex or sex dolls and even those who are aware often find it difficult to adopt the technology. This disconnection from sex workers and sex partners has witnessed serious consequences.
Research has shown that men who did not have access to sex workers during the COVID-19 lockdown have resulted to various means of satisfying themselves. Lack of toilet facilities has also compounded the problem. Female children, for example, had to go out of their houses to ease themselves during the COVID-19 lockdown without unsuspecting relatives knowing. This has opened doors of opportunity for the criminals to perpetrate their acts as the children where not overpowered outrightly were enticed with goodies and carried distant hidden places in other to rape them.
Rape occurs not only to the adults but also, the female child. According to the World Health Organization, sexual violence begins in childhood and adolescence. In some countries, up to one-third of adolescent girls report forced sexual initiation (https://www.who.int/violence_injury_prevention/violence/world_report/factsheets/en/sexualviolencefacts.pdf?ua=1
Data has shown that COVID-19 pandemic period has witnessed more glaring problems of rape than ever before and as a social problem, has attracted public attention and has been widely campaigned against on radio,TV, the social media, etc.
CNN documents it: "Nigerian state governors resolve to declare state of emergency on rape following spate of sexual violence" https://edition.cnn.com/2020/06/12/africa/nigeria-state-of-emergency-rape/index.html
The bbc.com even documents it that "Thousands sign a petition and use the hashtag #WeAreTired to protest against recent rapes and killings" in Nigeria. All these by women.
However, all these campaigns and complaints against rape may only come and go- just like that- if no tangible sustainable measure is put in place.
Reports have shown that rape survivors often keep the occurrences to themselves. When rape survivors do not go the the hospital or clinic for test, this can lead to infections, such as Sexually Transmitted Infections and HIV/AIDs and unwanted/teenage pregnancy. The survivor can even commit suicide or become psychologically disturbed because of the shame that comes with it.
A survivor of rape may be willing to report the case but may not know which hospital/clinic should be contacted for treatment or who to contact in order to obtain justice.
And even with the extant sex technology such as sex toys and virtual sex innovations, a whole lot of people are still not aware that these technologies can serve as alternatives to sex rather than committing rape as crime.
Rapefighters platform seeks to link rape survivors with:
(1) Only registered and licensed hospitals/clinics nearest to them where post-rape tests can be conducted. Only registered and licensed hospitals are included to prevent further problems that may creep in as a result of quack medical practitioners.
(2) Law enforcement agents(the Nigeria Police) nearest to them.
(3) Registered lawyers who can take up the case for the survivors in the court of law.
(4)Provide learning materials on how to avoid being raped to the female population even to the most difficult to reach population.
(5)Educate men on use of sex technology as an alternative sex partner in order to avoid committing rape.
(6)Advocate and get sex technology go viral particularly among men such that instead on looking for female children or girls or women to rape, they can rape their toys or virtual sex partners
(4)Provide learning resources on rape.
What minimum viable solution(s) are you proposing to address the challenge(s) in your community?
MINIMUM VIABLE SOLUTIONS

We seek to proffer solutions to the problem of rape using this platform with support from the Ministry of House, Nigeria Bar Association, the Nigeria Police Force and various Youth Associations across Nigeria to ensure those who connect to the platform get the right helps they need. We also seek to deploy Android and IOS apps for those with smartphones and USSD for the population without smartphones. We also seek to clamp down on the sexual exploitation often faced by rape survivors in the course of seeking help. Delivering contents to those who are connected to the platform is our priority. Youth engagement online and offline is key to our project's promotion and we also seek public private partnership to ensure the project go to the nook and cranny of Nigeria.

I am Gbemisola Joshua from Oyo State, Nigeria. I love researching into social problems and ways to proffer solutions to them. Since graduation in 2015, I have spent most of my earnings on doing research.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, movement was restricted; people could not take to the street as usual. Meanwhile, most people appeared in the social media unusually, even the street traders became Facebookers! And so, this gave me the opportunity to observe and research the kind of contents people shared on their timeline. One day, I stumbled upon a viral video of how a small girl was raped in the far northern part of Nigeria. The most surprising thing in the video was that there was no emergency response whatsoever by the onlookers, they were only busy for hours telling the baby girl "sorry" "sorry". In order word, they did not know what to do to the girl than to say sorry? I was surprised and so I carried out a quick search of the keyword "rape" on Facebook and Twitter and I was surprised by the number of results in different video clips that I saw- only during the lockdown! with the same attitude or lack of knowledge on what to do.
This prompted me to fling into action by developing the Rapefighters platform to educated the general public and to connect rape survivors to professional helpers.
Please provide any additional relevant information that you would like to share.
Rapefighters web platform visitors have the choice to search by themselves or use the paid search functionality and can also access paid counseling, which are put in place to make the platform to be sustainable.
Your Final Proposal for challenge
yes
Hi, I get a bit confused about your project name and project descriptions. In you project description you have written about rape, its look like one problem you want to solve but your project name look likes a big initiative you want to taking. Could you please think about name and descriptions. Good initiative!
I believe this is a very important app not only in Nigeria.
If you develop this as a progressive web app, you can have one source code and run it as a mobile app, tablet app and website the same time without the need to develop native apps. I assume usage on Smartphones would be the main. Also, did you think of an SOS button that goes i.e. to an emergency center?
Greetings
Let me give you a big congratulation about your ideas which is the solution to a female who is likely to get raped.I was a little bit confused about how you will support women who didn't have access to digital literacy to get access to your service. Anyway keep it up
Many persons come out to say they have been victims of rape. I have no doubt about this , but my fear is that many persons who come out to say they have been raped have been faced with trauma , meanwhile the perpetrators of such acts have been allowed to move freely. How do you people identify the actual perpetrators since there is hardly any evidence of rape such as pictures, videos and the likes?
very nice initiative. Does your application have an emergency functionality, ie when you are faced with an emergency situation using the application you can call the police or an ambulance.?
I think we need to integrate sensory sensors and configure them in cases where the problem occurs, these sensors can automatically trigger and call for emergencies. Beyond that, you can integrate it with the elderly who are also very vulnerable and who often do not have the strength to alert relatives when they have difficulties. thanks and good luck
Hello, well penned but have you also considered provision of after rape physical psychological evaluation and counselling by pairing victims with counselors within their domain. If not free then at a very very minimal cost as such an evaluation can also aid build a strong case. So it not only has a digital component but more
Hello Joshua, this is beautiful idea. here is what i think about this project;
From research, a lots of rape victims find it difficult to share their rape experiences, I did a research in school on rape in Nigeria, most young adults, would rather not, so how well do you think victims would be willing to make report on your platform. and again how safe is their information?
the application is actually a nice concept but i was just wondering if you have thought about those in rural communities who do not have access to smartphones
How does it guard against stigmatization?
Hello Thomas, welcome idea. Please make it clear how you intend to monetise this idea and the scalability as it is a solution that if well executed can really scale.
Dear Joshua,
Novel idea for a noble cause!
In Nigeria could be that sexual violence victims are becoming more encouraged to report crimes. There is a systemic failure in handling this spiraling crime. Some women and girls have reportedly become vulnerable to sexual exploitation when they report to police. How would you improve it?
How this service will be sustainable- can you elaborate? I have seen several novel causes failed to scale due to not having a business case.
Can you think of anything that will prevent rape ever happening. Given the appalling Law Enforcement and Minimal Punishment- may be you can think some more about that aspect as well.
Thank you.
Hi Joshua,
It is a good initiative. Is there a way that, you can identify special desks or link to those hospitals or clinics that address rape issues directly ?Most of the health systems in the developing countries are overworked and overloaded, I am afraid that, your rape victims may end up moving up and down in the hospitals or clinics for several days, without being attended. Prior to being attended by Medical Practitioners they( rape victims) need Police Form 3, it takes a lot of movements for these victims.
Brialliant idea
You have my vote
Hello Joshua, have you considered developing an Android and IOS app to complement. Well done and all the very best.
Hi Joshua,
I trust you are well.
Let me congratulate you on your idea. It is unfortunate that our communities are still suffering from such horrific acts such as rape – I am truly saddened.
I wish to share a few considerations.
1. Consider expanding your idea description section to reflect how your web platform will contribute towards creating a tangible sustainable measure that will turn this act around?
2. Consider amending the problem section to really show (with statistics or facts pulled from reliable sources) how the COVID-19 has made it difficult for rape victims to get the help they require.
3. Consider amending the minimum viable solution section to reflect on how your web platform will address the problems experienced by rape victims as a result of COVID-19. Moreover, it may be beneficial to expound on what learning resources are provided to rape victims.
4. I get the impression that your platform is more reactive, meaning that it deals with victims. It would be great to add features that are proactive, thus work towards stopping it before it happens.
Dear Gbemisola Joshua,
I find your project to be very simple and effective. Most victims don't have idea of what to do after they've been attacked and, are also later victims of unethical "helpers".
How are you planning to promote and publicize your platform? How have you planned to instill credibility in your platform?
Do you have the endorsment of the authorities you include in the resources for the victims? If so, it would be important you mentioned this fact in your presentation.
Best of luck
Hello Joshua, good to see a Nigerian coming out to pitch a project like this particularly for us girls. Can I join your team?
Hi Joshua,
This is a fantastic initiative. I think you should include an auto update that will always send an awareness message periodically to all registered on the platform. Good one.
It is a very important issue and definitely needs initiation. My main concerns for the project would be on how do you provide confidence to the users who are already traumatised to share their information. And is there anything the platform can do to address and prevent the rape from happening, like perhaps educating people of areas where frequent incident has been reported or contents on self defence and preparedness for such horrific atrocities.
Sure you are doing good. Kindly review this project. Thanks.

Hi Joshua, awesome idea. How are victims currently solving that problems and what is your unique value proposition? Then what is the link in relation to Covid 19? Thank you and all the best
Kindly share with me your business model of how you will sustain the organisation and apps
I admire your courage to deal with such a painful topic, which is still considered taboo in many societies. I would reframe the problem from the point of view of the victim. Connecting to lawyers, health professionals and the police does not solve the problem of rape. It solves the problem of the lack of support post-rape. It is very important to frame the reasons why are such connections needed, how is it going to change/alterate a raped person’s lives specifically in Nigera. And perhaps, how can it in the long run, it can help reduce the curve of rape cases.
Your objective is a restatement of your product offer, not a clear vision or mission statement. Perhaps, you want to spend sometime of dreaming for a better future as a team and share it with us on paper ? You state : « Covid-19 pandemic period has witnessed more glaring problems of rape than ever before.”.
I would like to know how and why COVID19 has increased the number of rape cases. You state three different types of partnerships, it might be useful for you to speak to each of them to understand whether they already have facilities/capacity/service for dealing with cases of rape. The last thing you want is a victim seeking help on a platform and not able to receive it in person when redirected to your partners.
In terms of storytelling, I would like you to take us back to a moment, when the problem occurred to you: whether this was a conversation you have had that would justify the need for such a platform.
