Digital cord

Training program in the use of technology aimed at women in order to empower them and generate sustainable enterprises, initially in rural areas of Colombia.

The program will be restructured and adjusted to the training needs of the target community, and new communities will be reached according to the interest and support received for the initiative, both from the community and from the sponsors.

The product is a PBL Project Based Learning methodology to develop productive digital products or services.

Our idea is to develop workshops and joint training in digital skills for children and mothers. We called our project: digital cord, promoting digital entrepreneurship.

The main objective is that both are learning simultaneously. So children help and motivate moms to learn, who usually fear using ICTs.

Our idea is focused on female empowerment from the acquisition of digital skills, mainly aimed at rural or low-income women.

State your goals

  1. Develop digital skills in rural and / or low-income women, to reduce illiteracy and lack of opportunities, by encouraging virtual training for children and women, favoring access to education.

  2. Give greater opportunities to women and their children in this condition, generating stronger family ties, and getting innovational projects as a family.

  3. Promote digital entrepreneurship in women, so they have more opportunities to fend for themselves, so that their economic dependency decreases (economic dependency, added to the lack of education, is one of the causes of domestic violence, and teenage pregnancy)

What problems (particularly in value chain competitiveness and global disruption) are your community’s stakeholders facing due to the Covid-19 pandemic?

Digital literacy and the lack of access to digital tools for families is a evident need in this time of pandemic. Women, who are mainly responsible for accompanying the training processes of children, do not have the skills required to guide them, and this shows their lack of access to better life opportunities.

A gap has been generated at the level of education in the rural area in relation to the urban or high-resource areas, because they do not have technological tools and skills to carry out the virtual education process,

This is generating in the long term school dropout and an increase in child labor because children do not have the tools to respond to this kind of training.

These are some evidences:

What minimum viable solution(s) are you proposing to address the challenge(s) in your community?

Our minimum viable solution is a program to provid digital education services to mothers and children, giving them access to the internet, and developing joint support digital literacy modules.

The learning experience will be developed under the PBL Project Based Learning methodology, where the child and the mother build a collaborative project to solve a problem in their community.

As a first step, they formulate a problem that affects them (it may be as a family or community), then they analyze possible solutions with the help of the digital tools available in the mobile car and then build a solution strategy that will later be socialized in the community. .

The strategy will also have a strong component of collaboration between mother and child. Since it is the child who will serve as a tutor to the mother in the development of digital skills. They will work together around the development of the project idea.

The product is a PBL Project Based Learning methodology to delvelop productive digital products or services.

The mechanism is to involve University students of Technology like tutors to teach and develop a project with the mothers and their children.

The key activities of the minimum viable solution are:

  • To present our project to private and public institutions to create a support net: We need financial support, computers, tablets and internet connection for these populations.
  • To request for classrooms and computers to the schools near to the area: We found that the most sustainable way to develop our project is through the schools near to the community. Here we can have a place to develop the training program, we can have some computers, and in some cases, there is internet connection.
  • Develop the minimum platform to guide the PBL Project Based Learning methodology to delvelop productive digital products or services: The objective is developing a website with the training program, with content, tools, and this will be a platform to present the results: developed projects to the world.
  • To involve University students of Technology like tutors, as part of their social service.: We will present this idea to some universities in order to get some support, our proposal is that the university students of Technology careers, like engineering, pedagogy, computing and others can serve like tutors in this program as part of their social service.
  • To make a call to the interested mothers in the community to participate in the program.: Women in the rural areas will be invited to participate in this program. We will use the schools to communicate about this program to the mothers of the students, and using local radio stations to involve women in the area.
  • Develop the projects.: The training program will be developed in the facilities and with the available computers in the schools of the area. The PBL Project Based Learning methodology will be develop in this stages: first,  they identify and formulate a problem that affects them (it may be as a family or community), then they analyze possible solutions with the help of the digital tools available and then build a solution strategy. The solutions and projects should be sustainable. Tutors will guide them in the learning ot the contents in digital skills, while they are developing their own projects.
  • Launch projects and promote them on a platform and social networks : In the website and social networks will be show the projets, and these will be participating in programs to promote them.

The future of this is creating an ecosystem to support the project to make it sustainable. And create entrepreneurship and leadership skills to form new leaders in each region where this will be implemented.

These leaders will be new tutors and they can boost and replicate this methodology in others communities, and with the new generations of this community, increasing the scope and impact of the project.

Share your story (your narrative)

This is our story-telling narrative:

She is María, a woman who lives in the rural area of Sogamoso, a town in Colombia, who is part of the 19 percent of the women in Colombia who do not have access to internet. And like her, 90.6% of women in rural areas do not have a computer or access to training in the use of technology. Additionally, like her, 21.4% do not have a job according to the National Administrative Department of Statistics DANE, Colombia.

Like her, her son does not have access to technology and training in school is insufficient. This situation worsened even more with the pandemic generated by Covid -19 since, not having access to technology, their training process was interrupted, which increases inequality and school dropouts.

This is why our proposal is initially aimed at rural areas of Colombia and consists of a training program in the use of technology aimed at women like María and her children, in order to empower them in the development of sustainable productive projects supported in the use of technologies.

The learning experience will be developed under the PBL Project Based Learning methodology, where the childred and the mother build a collaborative project to solve a problem in their community.

As a first step, they formulate a problem that affects them (it may be as a family or community), then they analyze possible solutions with the help of the digital tools available and then build a solution strategy that will later be socialized in the community.

The main problems to be solved are:

High rate of digital illiteracy in rural areas

High level of unemployment, low income and economic dependency

Low level of access to technological tools

What we propose to solve these problems is:

Digital training for women and children.

Entrepreneurship programs

Access to technological tools

Therefore, if we help women like María to learn and develop digital enterprises, we will be solving problems that are of interest to both you and us, if you want to support this idea, help reduce digital illiteracy and improve the economic conditions of this population and give them new opportunities for these families, support us with your vote.

About us:

We are Kely Doncel and Leidy Fajardo Sua, we have known each other since childhood, we study together. This is our story:

We study at a women's school in Duitama, Boyacá in Colombia. This is a small city in an area dedicated mainly to agriculture.

I am Kely Doncel, graduated in Industrial Mechanics from the Pedagogical and Technological University of Colombia. Currently, I am a teacher of elementary education.

My work with rural children has been the most beautiful experiences of my life. Clean air and coffee in the morning watching the animals don't compare to anything. They have taught me the value of little things and the importance of going back to our roots, culture and traditions. That is why I try to give the best in my work and contribute to the progress of my country. In my work I realize that it is the women who are in charge of the home and the care of the children and that many of them carry out hard field work. It is very common to hear stories of family abuse and extreme poverty, so I think we should strive to provide opportunities that can create change not only in the lives of children but also in their families.

About me, Leidy Fajardo Sua, I studied Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the National University of Colombia, and I work as a teacher at the El Bosque University in Bogotá.

My maternal family comes from the countryside, that is why I spent my vacation as a child in the rural area , between games, milking, collecting eggs, bathing with my cousins in clean rivers, enjoying food made on a wood stove, seeing those unimaginably beautiful landscapes.

This is life in the country, calm. Unfortunately, due to the violence that our country experimented, my family had to migrate, but many families still live in the countryside of my country.

The situation is complex especially for women, due the economic and social problems that we face as a country. Women have to face unemployment, teenage pregnancy or at a very early age, domestic violence.

Please provide any additional relevant information that you would like to share.

Female empowerment and family bonding through the development of digital skills can change entire communities.

This is a nice Idea. Just have a few questions that would help you make it better.

How is the project sustained?
Since it's mobile, hope you could allocate time frame for each community and development of their solutions.

In a family with boys only, how is the mother helped out, hope you could try to address this to?

How are you going to handle parent to child relationship, especially in rural areas where parents think they are always right, now seeing the child teaching them plus the child remaining loyal to the parent despite the child now acting like a teacher. Hope this helps you to improve your solution.
Good luck

Uche Udekwe Jul 24, 2020

yeah you are very right.. it's really a nice idea.. but I'm also concerned about the sustainability.. maybe you should look around outsourcing

Leidy Fajardo Sua Jul 24, 2020

Thanks Uche for your comments. That is true. sustainability is key in this proyect. In this momment, Just now, this project is an initial phase, so it depends on the support of private and public, national and international institutions that can be linked in the future to support this proposal.

Leidy Fajardo Sua Jul 24, 2020

We really appreciate your comments. About your questions:
How is the project sustained? This project is an initial phase, so the time assigned for the development of each project with each community and its scope depends on the support of private and public, national and international institutions that can be linked in the future to support this proposal.

In a family with boys only, how is the mother helped out, hope you could try to address this to?
This proposal is focused for both cases, for moms with boys or girls, or both, the relevant point is the participation of the moms, who normally are very young in this context.

How are you going to handle parent to child relationship, especially in rural areas where parents think they are always right, now seeing the child teaching them plus the child remaining loyal to the parent despite the child now acting like a teacher. : That can be a fact, but it is not a commun case in most of moms in rural areas, becuase normally they have only a minimal education level, and they are very interested in helping their children, more in this time. That is a strong motivation for them to learn, and this motivation is the one that is used to help them too.

Thanks Agnes for your help!! We are going to include these points in our proposal.

Dear Leidy, Kely,
I'm glad to see Women Empowerment opportunities. Your ideas is interesting. Our organisation does also organize events to popularize the Embedded area in Moldova. Since it is an interesting issue for us as well, I'd like to know how are you funding your project. Do you receive any type of investment or do you receive support from grants? What are prerequisites for participants? Have you done any reserarch to see what level of training different categories of participants need?

Thank you in advance.

Leidy Fajardo Sua Jul 24, 2020

Most of the women, who are mothers in the rural area of our country, have a minimum educational level, so it is necessary to start from the most basic.

We want to share with you, one story that is an example of a simple project like those that could be done with our proposal:

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeUlkw2mOytSyH-7GerzeLQ/about

It is a YouTube channel with a simple theme but which has been very successful, and has become a source of business and sustenance for this family. It is called Nubia e hijos

This was developed for Huertos de la Sabana (social entrepreneurship) with this family of a mom with her children.
This is the description of the channel: "We are a humble peasant family who, due to the high number of intermediaries in the sale of their crops, decided to create a YouTube channel to teach people how to grow in their homes or apartments, also experiences in the Colombian countryside, country documentaries, etc. "

Diana Artiom Aug 10, 2020

Thank you for your reply. It's very interesting! Best of luck with your idea!

EUNICE KAJALA Jul 24, 2020

Dear Leidy,
What is the level of literacy of the children in your area? Are they capable of absorbing your digital skills? What digital entrepreneurship opportunities are available for women in your area?

Leidy Fajardo Sua Jul 24, 2020

Dear Eunice, We really appreciate your question. Please see our previous answer, and I really invite you to see this Youtube channel to have a more clear idea of the context: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeUlkw2mOytSyH-7GerzeLQ/about

I am thinking there ought to be an age range? Am thinking secondary school girls/rural women who got pregnant out of wedlock, African women whose source of livelihood might be farming ? As some women are in a situation where they are going to school and their kids are too.

Leidy Fajardo Sua Jul 24, 2020

Dear Sunday, Thanks, this is a very good idea to be more specific to a group pf women!!
This project is located in Colombia, South America.

Sunday Bawa Jul 24, 2020

Noted. You're welcome

Hi Leidy, your idea is very thoughtful and I like that you are passionate. I just voted to encourage you to conduct market research to validate your idea. The goal here is to build what people want. That way you will be on your way to achieving product-market-fit (PMF). Goodluck

Achia Khaleda Jul 25, 2020

Hi Leidy, You concept is very specific and you target group also very specific. Do you have any plan how do you make it sustainable.

James Kiruri Jul 25, 2020

Hello Leidy, this is a great initiative. What is the plan to scale it in Colombia and beyond. Also is this purely a social enterprise or is there a commercial angle to it?

Leidy Fajardo Sua Jul 26, 2020

Dear James, Thanks. It is neccesary to have a pilot test first in our region, and then if more private and public institutions help us, this can be extended to other regions. It is a social enterprise but our proposal is developing profitable projects for these families.

Nabuyuni Sankan Jul 26, 2020

Hello
This is a great initiative,

Some of the concerns are what target specified number are you looking to work with?,If you are required to have a mobile car that has access to the solar power and devices how will the women and girls use them from each home in the community?

What model of ICT training are you looking to implement in teaching ?For example basic introduction and presentation skills or what exactly will you be teaching kindly elaborate.

Generally this is brilliant and the fact that it is touching the rural communities it is amazing.

Looking forward to working with you.

Leidy Fajardo Sua Jul 26, 2020

Dear Nabuyuni, Thanks for your comments, about your questions:
Some of the concerns are what target specified number are you looking to work with?
We can pilot test our proposal with families with children studying at the school where Kely works at the moment.

,If you are required to have a mobile car that has access to the solar power and devices how will the women and girls use them from each home in the community?
That's the point, they don't have access to internet, or a home computer. that is the reason of our proposal to give access to these community.

What model of ICT training are you looking to implement in teaching ?For example basic introduction and presentation skills or what exactly will you be teaching kindly elaborate
We want to do ICT projets with them to give them opportunities for business, and more access to education.

Thanks.

RACHEL MIAMI Jul 26, 2020

Hello Leidy ?Your idea sounds good kindly elaborate your business model

Leidy Fajardo Sua Jul 26, 2020

Dear Rachel, Yes, that is key, we are working in that. Thanks

Ayobami Adeyemo Jul 26, 2020

Good job. Do you have any plan of extending it to the black community?

Leidy Fajardo Sua Jul 26, 2020

Dear Ayobami,

Of course, that is possible. In our specific region, there is not a black community. Maybe in others regions of Colombia, but this project can be extend to any community. Thanks

Joshua GBEMISOLA Jul 26, 2020

I like your project. Are you planning something like a pay later or pay-as-you-go gadget for them after training to put what they have learnt into practice? Can you consider public-private partnership in your business model?

Leidy Fajardo Sua Jul 29, 2020

Dear Joshua, Thanks for your comments. About your questions:
- Are you planning something like a pay later or pay-as-you-go gadget for them after training to put what they have learnt into practice?
That is a good idea to do sustainable our project. Thanks
-Can you consider public-private partnership in your business model?
Yes, We need some help of public and private institutions to get our goals.

Ivana Kostic Jul 27, 2020

Hi Leidy, love the idea! In which countries have you tested your solution by now? What is the feedback from the users? Do you have any progress since the first courses and user-case experiences from day 1 to today? Many thanks! Keep the good work, Ivana

Leidy Fajardo Sua Jul 29, 2020

Dear Ivana, We appreciate your comments. This idea is right now in a conception stage, but we are planning how to do the pilot tests as soon as possible. The idea to extent this proposal to other countries with similar problems sounds great. Thanks.

Calister Simba Aug 11, 2020

Targeting rural areas is a very good approach but I have few questions that I think you might need to takeito consideration

1. How will your project sustained -how will you be able to generate enough profit to sustain the project?
2. How will you face the ideology challenge of mothers/women are not supposed to study hard subjects or even study at all?
3. Will you remove those mobile cars once they are done with projects? How will they keep updated with digital world , How will they continue with digital skills training?

Nice combination of mother and child in digital learning. I also love the empowerment side mention in your objective, however, how do you ensure that digital skills empowered are converted to better their lives post-training.

Muyunda Kaonga Aug 28, 2020

Dear Leidy, thumbs up to you. This is a brilliant submission awesome works. Today, it is becoming increasingly important for developing economies to adapt to the rapidly changing skills landscape. To become more competitive and follow the fast pace of technological innovation globally, developing economies need to re-skill their workforce with the skills for the jobs of the future hence the need to also involve women and girls in ICT. All the best
