Kitovu

Over 75% of all food production across Africa is carried out by smallholder farmers. Despite how diverse they are, with different religions, ethnicities, crops grown, and sizes of farms, they have three key things in common:

1. They rely on guesswork to make most of their decisions.

2. They have very low purchasing power and as such don't readily have access to high-quality inputs, yield improving innovations, and post-harvest infrastructure.

3. They find it difficult to get access to guaranteed markets for their produce.

We started Kitovu to solve these problems.

For Smallholder farmers who require data to make smart decisions about yield optimization and what to grow that will sell, Kitovu has developed a digital farm productivity platform that provides them with precise inputs, soil and crop health insights, access to storage, and market linkages, enabling them to optimize their yields, and unlock access to markets for their produce.

Interesting. How do you deal with illiterate farmers when we know most of them are illiterate and not tech friendly?

We run an agent system, where we train young people on extension, agronomy and platform usage. They interphase with the farmers directly. The farmers do not have to use the platform directly.
