Kampung Marketer is empowering village youth in e-commerce field
Kampung Marketer wants to solve the unemployment issue in Purbalingga, which is included in the top 10 districts with lowest income in Central Java, Indonesia. This problem is experienced by people in rural areas where there is a lack of internet and knowledge in this area. I want to solve that problem by training and educating village youth about e-commerce that would make them be skilfull human resources in the e-commerce field to compete in the new era digital 4.0. This would be a better solution because it would not take any fee from village youth, it is totally free of cost, it would be taking 1 week until 1 month for the training program, it would not require large investments in infrastructure, it would last long, and village youth can get decent work and monthly income after pass the training program by collaborate with SMEs in Indonesia.
Our business model (revenue stream) comes from monthly admin fees paid by our service users, namely SMEs that empower rural youth who have passed education and training at KampungMarketer. That's what we use to finance our operational costs. We have tested this idea for 3 years, from the start until now it still creates a profit per month (even without investment). We believe our ideas will be sustainable into the future.
Define three specific objectives that you would like to achieve with your proposal.
Kampung Marketer is having goals to be achieved for next 1 year, there are:
-
Empowering 1400 village youth in the next 1 year to rescue the unemployment issue.
-
Collaborating with 630 SMEs in Indonesia in the next 1 year, by this collaborating with more SMEs we can empower more village youth.
-
In the next 1 year, from total 1.400 village youth are empowered, they are going to make a total income around IDR 2.2 billion per month.
Current achievements are:
-We have empowered 800 village youths.
-Already collaborated with 270 SMEs
-Turning the circulation of city to village money (village youth income accumulation) worth IDR 1.3 billion per month
What problems (particularly in value chain competitiveness and global disruption) are your community’s stakeholders facing due to the Covid-19 pandemic?
Covid-19 pandemic is causing a lot of trouble for stakeholders, but Kampung Marketer still can sustain with some problems we found. Our main partners are SMEs in Indonesia and due to the Coronavirus, a lot of them are stopping the collaboration with Kampung Marketer. It is creating a domino effect to us due to how they stop the collaboration means that our village stops getting decent work.
The training program of Kampung Marketer also has to stop due to anticipating the spreading coronavirus, we have to wait to conduct the training program. For a moment we are doing an online training program and free webinar which is conducted every week to give support to village youth, businessmen and SMEs in Indonesia for surviving during Pandemic.
By this webinar and online training, we can support SMEs to run their business online even if they have to do social distance and work from home. For village youth who are working from home, we are assisting leaders to monitor their performance closely to keep SMEs survive and satisfied.
In early 2020, Kampung Marketer has collaborated with more 300 SMEs in Indonesia, but during Pandemic, the collaboration is decreasing into 250 SMEs. Now, after we are conducting the webinar every week, we have increased the collaboration into 270 SMEs.
From this data, we believe that running business online is one of the solution for SMEs during Pandemic, and Kampung Marketer is ready to support all of our partners.
What minimum viable solution(s) are you proposing to address the challenge(s) in your community?
What minimum viable solution(s) are you proposing to address the challenge(s) in your community?
Kampung Marketer found to solve below issue in our village:
-
Unemployment issue of village youth
-
High urbanization flow
To solve the above issue, we have solutions to train, educate and give skills to village youth in the e-commerce field, by this program they can learn how to be good advertisers, good customer service, social media admin, content writer, etc..
We have a complete learning center infrastructure covering classes, instructors, curriculum, and teaching materials. The curriculum at KampungMarketer includes the skills needed in the field of e-commerce, including:
1. Digital Marketing (online advertising)
2. Customer Service
3. Content Writer
4. Social Media Admin
5. etc, positions and skills related to e-commerce
Each curriculum above has a different duration, passing grade, instructor. Participants come from rural youth who are still unemployed. After the training participants have met the passing grade specified in a curriculum, they will collaborate to help SMEs to optimize sales on the internet. From this collaboration program they get a monthly salary from our service users (SMEs). By this collaboration, they are getting decent work and good income without leaving the hometown.
SInce 2017 until now, this solution is growing up everytime,
-
Currently we are empowering 800 village youth in the e-commerce field.
-
We have helped 270 SMEs in Indonesia to run their business online.
-
From the total above collaboration, 800 village youth have made a total income IDR 1.4 billion each month.
-
We have 20 empowerment centers as a working place for village youth.
Share your story (your narrative)
I am Nofi Bayu Darmawan from Purbalingga, I am from a farmer family with big debt in 2011, After I graduated from Senior high school, I continued my study at Indonesian State College of Accountancy. During the study, I have done many extra jobs to get additional income, and finally I learned about e-commerce and I get serious in this field. When I graduated from college, I had a good income, had my own e-commerce team and finished all my family debt. After I graduated, I worked as a civil servant in the financial ministry, and the daily job is controlling the working performance, competence and skills of other civil servants.
But when I am going to my hometown, it feels so pathetic that I found unemployment of village youth, and villages are so quiet due to most of the villagers wandering.
Based on my knowledge about e-commerce and skills of managing work and to solve unemployment issues, I found Kampung Marketer in Aug 2017. WIth Kampung Marketer, we can teach village youth new skills in e-commerce and prepare them to be qualified human resources in the new era digital 4.0.
Please provide any additional relevant information that you would like to share.
Our target collaboration are SMEs in Indonesia, and total SMEs in Indonesia is reaching 63 million SMEs and only 18% are running their business online. With a balance of SMEs not running businesses online, we are sure that we can help the balance SMEs to optimize their business online and make their market coverage wider.
Your Final Proposal for challenge
yes
Dear Nofi, this is a brilliant concept and seems to already work and creating great results. I believe this could also very well work in Africa. Would you be interested to collaborate?
Hello Nofi. This is a passionate project submission. It's great to know you have the background and experience with e-commerce vertical. However, you will need to state categorically what your target audience will be learning from you - are you teaching them how to sell on your e-commerce store or you are training them on how to create their individual e-commerce stores? What is the duration of the program? How many days in a week? Since this is a not-for-profit initiative, how will this be sustainable? Are you providing them with the tools to facilitate the learning process? What tools and how many are available? What do you hope to achieve through the ITU Innovation challenge?
Hello Nofi, this is a brilliant idea. However, it is not very clear what the business model is, is it for profit or is it social enterprise?
I would like to congratulate you on your ideas which is aligned with digital change-makers challenges as well as helping youth as well as partner with SME. keep it up on making sustainability of your ideas and projects

Your idea is wonderful and very relevant. How do you intend to solve the internet problem as pointed out in your first paragraph. This is a major pre-requirement and milestone for your project.

Hello dear, In your project you have highlighted the training so many times. But I think you can think more than training. You can make an online marketplace like Alibaba. You also can create some brands in rural areas besides training. Initially you can introduce F-commerce opportunities for the rural people. When they get involved with the F- commerce then you can insist them for their own website or can invite them to your marketplace. We also working on E-commerce at rural area and we have build a community over there. You also can do the same.
This is a good initiative, When we speak about E-commerce we also need to have logistics and internet connection in mind, in respect of the village centres how are you addressing these?
Hello Nofi Bayu Darmawan
Good Stuff ,I believe that is a project that is very achievable,Quick question since you are targeting the villages ,kindly elaborate how you solved the issue of accessing digital materials such as phones or platforms to achieve the goals stated above addressing the issue of internet connectivity?
This is an amazing cause ,keep at it.
Best Regards,
Hi Nofi, this is an awesome idea. Digital Inclusion is concerned with addressing inequalities, where those unable to access the affordance of technologies are, disadvantaged, marginalized in society and therefore digitally excluded. How do you intend to solve issues of internet connection as many people in rural areas have issues with connectivity even in developed countries like UK this is a major issue?
Hi Nofi, This is a great idea and you have surely earn my vote and I believe you can collaborate with others from different parts of the world to gain more insights as well as exchange contacts and ideas on how to reach wider audience. Please share your insights in my project too at women in technology challenge, my project is called CYBERDADA TZ.
Keep up the good work!!

Hi Nofi, in your above submission, you have mentioned "we have solutions to train, educate and give skills to village youth in the e-commerce field, by this program they can learn how to be good advertisers, good customer service, social media admin, content writer, etc.. After they finish the training". This is too vague in my opinion. Describe the key activities and mechanisms involved in it. Also describe, how exactly this training programs help you bridge the gap between your existing problem and opportunities (identify and list this) in your community.
